SERVICE PROJECTS
HIGHLAND LIONS SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The Scholarship program awards
a
$1,000 stipend to a graduating senior(s) of Highland High School
annually. Permanent funding has been started through a $10,000 donation
to the Highland Area Community Endowment fund for this scholarship
program. Any individual or group can add to this fund at any time. Only
the proceeds will be used to fund the scholarship.

PURCHASING EYE EXAMS AND
GLASSES
The Highland Lions Club
provides eye
exams and glasses to needy school students and senior citizens.
Students are identified by the school nurse, seniors are identified by
nursing home social workers. Each case must meet criteria set down by a
Lions committee. Several local optometrists work with the Lions to
provide these services at a reduced cost to the Lions.

PURCHASING HEARING AIDS
The Highland Lions Club
provides
hearing exams and used hearing aids to needy seniors. The seniors are
identified by nursing home social workers. Each senior must meet
criteria set down by a Lions committee. The hearing aids are usually
purchased through the Used Hearing Aid Bank of the Lions of Illinois
Foundation.

SPONSORING KIDS TO CAMP LION
A generous contribution is made
annually to Camp Lion. When eligible children are identified, the
Highland Lions sponsors their stay at the camp.

LIONS GIRLS BASKETBALL LEAGUE
The Highland Lions sponsor a
city
girls basketball league for ages 9 through 13. Begun in 1978 with 32
girls and 4 teams, the league regularly has 150 girls and 11 teams. In
addition there are 4 select teams that play girls from other towns. The
local lions furnish uniforms, referees, scorers and when needed
coaches. Lions also sponsor tournaments and work at concession stands
and ticket windows. Games are played at the Highland Weinheimer Gym or
the Korte Recreation Center.

ENVIRONMENTAL CLEANUP DAY IN
HIGHLAND
Early each May Highland Lions
participate in an area-wide cleanup day. Many civic organizations and
other volunteers worked on this massive effort. Discarded items are
brought by thousands of area residents to the Highland High School
parking lot. Hazardous materials is collected and disposed of in an
appropriate manner. A team of Lions combs the city for discarded large
items--like home appliances--which residents are not able to transport
to the school themselves.

CONTINUING PRESENCE IN HIGHLAND
The Lions built, installed and
continue to maintain park benches on the square and at Hoffman Park.
They also planted trees at Glik Park.
